In our society, one of every four adults (25%) is a regular snorer. Snoring is more frequent in men and people suffering overweight. It usually get worse as patient grows old. Statistics show that snoring is one of the main causes of divorce in the whole world.

Today, a new technology provides an effective treatment of snoring and sleep apnea. This treatment is performed in 15 minutes with a Diode Laser equipment, in doctor’s office, under local anesthesia, without any post-op pain, and with the certainty that you can resume your daily activities the day after surgery.

Snoring can affect the way a person performs in his/her job

What is snoring?

Snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. This area is the collapsible part of the airway (see illustration) where the tongue and upper throat meet the soft palate and uvula. Snoring occurs when these structures strike each other and vibrate during breathing. This problem can affect patients soccially and medically. In the social aspect, it can make the snorer an object of ridicule and causes others sleepless nights and resentfulness.

The snore appears in 25% of the adult population and causes both social and labour problems.

Consequences of snoring

From medical point of view, snoring disturbs sleeping patterns and deprives the snorer of appropriate rest. When a person snores, it avoids them to get into deep sleep. It can prolong all over the night, and the person will not get an adequate rest. It will be harder to wake up in the morning, and during the day, patient will have trouble with concentration and memory, and a poor labour performance.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

When loud snoring is interrupted by frequent episodes of totally obstructed breathing, it is known as obstructive sleep apnea. Apnea patients may experience hundreds of such events per night. These episodes can reduce blood oxygen levels, causing the heart to pump harder.

The immediate effect of sleep apnea is that the snorer must sleep lightly and keep his muscles tense in order to keep airflow to the lungs. Because the snorer does not get a good rest, he may be sleepy during the day, which impairs job performance and makes him a hazardous driver or equipment operator. After many years with this disorder, elevated blood pressure and heart enlargement may occur.

There are multiple home treatments created to improve habits and positions during bedtime, which can cause a partial control of the problem. Loosing weight, having a healthy lifestyle, healthy eating habits and stablishing regular sleep patterns can be useful measures.

There are also surgical procedures based on resection of soft palate tissue, reshaping uvula and cautery of nasal turbinates. These procedures are performed in a surgery room, under general anesthesia. This procedure lasts about 2 hours. It is a painful procedure and recovery can take one month or more. Its effectiveness in control of snore and sleep apnea is about 75-80%.

When sleep apnea can not be controled with these procedures and habits, it becomes necessary to use a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or “CPAP” device, which patient has to wear every night.

Diode Laser offers unique safety and higher effectveness in treatment of snoring and sleep apnea.

Is there a cure for snoring?

Yes. Snoring has a solution, but so far, these procedures have had a very painful recovery period, which causes smoe patients to avoid surgery and keep snoring, even when this can cause severe health problems.

What’s new in snore treatment?

There is a new, revolutionary technique in snore treatment. It consists in photocoagulation of affected tissues by means of a 980nm wavelength Diode Laser equipment. This laser doesn’t bur tissues, but goagulates them. After a few days, this tissue is re-absorbed, achieving fibrosis and retraction of flaccid muscles in the soft palate. This can also be used to reduce uvula, and to coagulate nasal turbinates if they are too large.

What are the advantages of using Diode Laser?

With this equipment, procedure can be made in doctor’s office, using local anesthesia. Procedure takes only 15 minutes and recovery is totally painless. No medical incapacity is required and you can go back to your daily activities the next day.
